I couldn’t help it, the title of this post amuses me. Partly because “crafty” happens in the middle. Hee. I figure it’s still January, so I can still invoke New Year’s resolutions for the rest of the month. Right? There will be time enough for hearts and flowers soon enough.
The day job has me sitting for a solid 10 hours a day for the next six weeks. I can’t really complain. It’s good work, I enjoy it, and the people are wonderful. I do, however, feel my every muscle actively atrophying by the end of the day. Being that I’m still recovering, just a bit, I decided that instead of doing my usual workout, which involves jumping up and down, using weights, ab work, and feeling like passing out on the best of days, I’d do a little yoga. Naturally this got me thinking about yoga accessories that I can make myself.
First, in the interest of honesty, I do have to point out that there are many, many patterns for yoga mat bags. Knit, crocheted, sewn, woven… and many are gorgeous. Not very many, however, are quick projects. I don’t sew much, so I’ll take any shortcut I can get.

This Yoga Mat Bag made from the leg of a pair of jeans fits the bill. I feel pretty confident in thinking that here are probably a lot of other prefabricated fabric tubes you could use for this as well. In fact, here’s one now:
Becky Stern posted this tutorial at Craft. I love these projest because they recycle, and still leave enough time for a little fabric paint/ribbon/bedazzler action. You’ve got a completely unique bag that no one else in class could possibly mistake for theirs.
If you use a yoga mat eventually it’s probably going to get sweaty and less sticky. Pre-made yoga mat cleaners are often expensive and may use weird chemicals. Here’s a recipe to make your own affordable and natural cleaner. You get to choose an essential oil to include, so if you love one, or really want to avoid one, it’s your show.
Also, while we’re on the subject of crafting and yoga, check out Yoga for Crafters. It’s a combination of yoga routines, helpful information for practitioners of yoga, and yoga based crafts.
