Organizing week… a few tools I like

in Organizing

I don’t know much about organizing (or photography) but I thought I’d offer a few ideas from my own craft room that have helped me organize my supplies better.

Mine's a mess, but this thing holds books, binders, boxes of needles, and SO MUCH yarn.

I realize that many people have neither the space nor the budget for my largest  suggestion, the 25-hole Expedit case from Ikea. All the same, if you’ve got an Ikea handy and need to consolidate things it can be a huge help. It comes in different dimensions, ranging from 2×2 to 5×5. The boxes I used in mine are also from Ikea. The cardboard ones are the Kassett ones and the ones with the zippers around the top, used for roving, which will compress a fair bit, are the Flort boxes.

It’s a really versatile piece too. (Check out the Flickr Expedit pool.) We liked the one in the craft room so much that we got one for the living room.

Family photos, an iPod listening station, and the cookbook storage.

If you find that you have a lot of smaller things to store, consider a back-of-the-door shoe organizer. Available at stores like Target and Wal-Mart, along with many higher end places, it’s wonderful for storing pens and markers, colored pencils, crochet hooks, small pieces of fabric, and random memoribilia.

Mine hold cards, small bottles of Mod Podge, index cards, pencils, Post-its, brads, yarn bras, and random medals from high school. Oh, and flags.

My last suggestion has been a lifesaver for me, especially moving into a smaller place. People have often told me that if I’m running out of floor space to go vertical, but until I tried peg board I couldn’t figure out how else to go vertical when storing smaller things like masking tape and scissors.

It's amazing the things I've been able to hang here. Embroidery hoops, my swift, my washi tape collection, etc.

The bar at the bottom of the board with the 4 bins on it came from Ikea as well. I spray painted the peg board and let it dry for about 24 hours before Mr. FC kindly put it up for me. You can see the paint samples I’m thinking about for the rest of the room
