Back to school crafts: Lunch Bags

Do kids like lunch bags? When I took my lunch to school I generally wanted exactly what everyone else had… a rectangular plastic lunchbox. Mine was red and Return of the Jedi-based and features a scene from the Ewok village on each side. Coolest. Lunch. Box. Ever. But anyway, I hope that kids (or adults) do like lunch bags, because I’ve got a few cool ones for you today.

Oh, this first one reminds me… the Martha Stewart site seems to really love “oilcloth”. Can someone tell me what, if any, is the difference between oilcloth and what at my local fabric store sells for making tablecloths and the like? This pattern provides a basic template for making a bag shape out of any stiff fabric.

The Purl Bee offers this pattern for making a similar bag out of cotton, but adds a button and some embroidery.

Kristy at Textiles 4 You for you made this lunch bag out of juice pouches. She very cleverly fill the pouches with batting for insulation. I think this one would be a great way to teach a child about the “reuse” portion of “reduce, reuse, recycle.”

Thank you for featuring my lunch box on your blog. I love the other two lunch boxes to. I’ve been seeing a lot of the oil cloth ones around, and I really want to try and make one.
